Many don't have the right to bitch, but will anyway
Let me start this out by saying that I’m not writing this in order to tell anybody else what to do. I’m merely stating my OPINION on the entire thing, which is my right, as this is my blog. So, if you read this and decide that I’m trying to tell you your business, I don’t want to hear about it, because I just now told you that I’m not. If you take offense to this, it’s YOUR problem, not mine.
Somebody close to me was arrested Friday night for driving while intoxicated. I’m not going to say who it was, because some of you already know, and if you don’t, it’s not really any of your business. This person doesn’t need to be identified in a public forum for this particular reason.
I was arrested for DWI back in the winter of 1991. I lost my license for 90 days and had to pay a metric assload (for the time) of money to get it back. Between fines, license fees, etc., I figure I shelled out about $800 total. That was a lot, for me. I understand the fees and fines and whatnot have become astronomical since then. But, that’s not what I’m writing about today.
I talked to this person on the phone last night to make sure they were all right, and to let them know I am here if they need anything. I don’t feel it’s my place to lecture anybody about this, because I’m not being inconvenienced at all by it.
HOWEVER.
If there were anybody with a right to lecture about this, it would be me, or somebody else who has gone through it. If you never drink and drive, either by not drinking at all, or by always using a sober, designated driver, then you also have the right to give lectures, to an extent. But, if you are somebody who drinks and drives and just never gets caught, or if you do get caught, manage to bluff your way out of the arrest, and I know plenty of people who fit these descriptions, you have NO right to lecture anybody about this at all. If one person’s DWI somehow inconveniences you by their need for favors, or whatever, then just don’t do the favors. Those of us who have actually been through it already feel bad enough about it. You don’t need to add to their burden, especially if you fit into either of those two categories.
To clarify: Do one of two things. Either don’t help the person if it is an inconvenience to you, or show them that you care, and help them, and let them know you don’t think less of them for what happened. In either case, do NOT lecture them. You don’t have the right to do that, unless you’ve been there yourself, as I stated earlier. I cannot stress that enough. You do not have the right. Not even if you consider it to be an inconvenience to you.
That’s all I’m going to write about on this. Let me conclude by reiterating: I know that somebody out there is going to take offense to this, and either call me, or write me, or comment, or whatever, but all I’m going to tell you is this: Go reread the first paragraph of this entry.
